With the vision of creating a local and international landmark, this competition required participants to design an innovative, sustainable and functional convention center at the newly developing Purbachal area. Aligning with the vision and requirement of the competition, the studio JHA, in bold strokes came up with a ground-breaking idea for the convention center that would serve the users, public and the city as a public interactive space.
Inspired by the city that houses the National Parliament Building designed by Louis I. Kahn, which boasts the famous public plaza representing democracy, the JHA studio came up with a solution that functioned as a plaza first, overlooking the banks of Tongi Canal and then an international convention center. Every part of the plaza prioritized pedestrian movement so the public could directly access the public plaza and ceremonial space on the rooftop of the convention center. The design proposal elevated the public plaza offering a vista of the surrounding and an enjoyable public space which is accessible for interaction with the users. The primary functions of the convention center housed underneath the public roof offered a shaded space for the seminars and public gathering at Purbachal above ground level.
The entry received juror and public appreciation and was exhibited at IAB as a recognition to the steadfast commitment and honesty towards the design as an exercise and practice that has always been the driving force and core value of Jubair Hasan Architect’s studio.
